Schedule Optimizer

Check off courses as you complete them. The scheduler re-solves the remaining prerequisite graph on every change: it prioritizes courses on the longest remaining dependency chain (the critical path to the capstone), then packs each semester up to your credit cap. This is a greedy heuristic for what is really an integer program — decision variable x[course, semester] ∈ {0,1}, prerequisite + credit-cap constraints, objective: minimize semesters to graduation.

How the scheduling model works
Nodes: each major's required/elective courses, sourced from Purdue's published plans of study and department handbooks.
Edges: prerequisite relationships between courses.
Constraint: a course can only be scheduled once every prerequisite is scheduled in a strictly earlier semester, and a semester's total credits ≤ your cap.
Objective: minimize total semesters, tie-broken toward keeping the officially recommended sequencing.
Optimality check: every time the schedule updates, the tool also computes a combinatorial lower bound — the larger of (a) total remaining credits ÷ credit cap, rounded up, and (b) the longest remaining prerequisite chain. No valid schedule can beat this bound, so when the greedy result matches it, the schedule is provably optimal.
Exact search: the "Run Exact Search" button above runs a real branch-and-bound solver — exhaustive subset enumeration per semester with lower-bound pruning, seeded by the greedy result as an initial incumbent, bounded to a 2-second time budget. When the eligible-course set at some step is too large to enumerate exhaustively (>15 courses), it falls back to a single greedy branch and honestly reports the search as incomplete rather than claiming a false proof.
Caveat: this mirrors each department's published curriculum but isn't the authoritative source — always confirm against myPurduePlan / DegreeWorks and an academic advisor before registering.

Weekly Timetable

Real class meeting times change every semester and aren't part of the degree plan itself. This builds a schedule for whatever you checked off in Currently Taking above; if nothing's checked yet, it shows the optimizer's suggested next semester instead. Toggle the days each course meets and set its start/end time; conflicts are flagged automatically.

Semester Calendar

Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 use Purdue's officially published academic calendar. Later terms are projected forward from that pattern (same weekday, ~371 days later) since Purdue hasn't published them yet — verify with the Registrar as your term approaches.

Critical Path Network (CPM)

A real Critical Path Method analysis of the full degree — Early Start/Finish and Late Start/Finish computed for every course, assuming unlimited parallel course-taking (no credit cap). Courses with zero slack (gold, thick edges) form the critical path: delay any one of them and graduation slips. This differs from the credit-capped roadmap above, which is the realistic, resource-constrained version of the same problem.
